Our Top Leashes

It’s easy to assume that all leashes are pretty much the same, but that can make choosing the right one even more difficult. We have a few recommendations to help you make the best choice for you and your pup (looking fashionable is super important as well :). There are many different length leashes out there, but we like 6 foot leashes in general. They give you some room, but are short enough to keep things under control. Plus some recommendations for walking two dogs and for running.

What we try to avoid in leashes:

  • 5 foot or less length

  • Anything retractable

What we look for in leashes:

  • 6 foot length

  • Padded wrist loop

  • Snap clip on wrist loop

Our Top Pick:

West Paw Jaunts Leash with Comfort Grip

This super solid leash from West Paw Design (one of our favorite suppliers) has a nifty clip on the wrist loop. This makes it much easier for a quick tie up if you’re picking up a coffee. You can even adjust it to fit around your waist for running (though there is no bungee function).

Best Parts

  • Solid construction from a quality supplier

  • Smart wrist loop clip and clip for keys

  • Adjustable size for wrist loop

  • Nice product guarantee and strong materials

Stuff We Don’t Love (but not deal breakers):

  • Pricier than other choices

Also a Good Choice:

Max and Neo Double Handle

This is a solid, high-value choice for basic 6 foot leash. Nice reflective pattern and double handle is useful. Seems sturdy and we’d imagine it would last a long time.

Best Parts:

  • 6 foot length

  • It has a nice soft handle for comfort

  • Second handle to give you extra control when you need it

  • Price is right

Stuff We Don’t Love (but not deal breakers):

  • No elasticity, so not great for running (see our choice for running leashes below)

  • Not sure about long-term durability, seems solid so far

Extra Support for Pullers and Reactive Dogs:

Gentle Creatures Collar Companion - Adjustable Collar Backup Clip for Dog Harness

This leash accessory allows a standard leash to not only connect to a harness, but also the dog’s collar at the same time. For many with reactive dogs or dogs that pull on the leash, this item is an essential bit of kit. Should the buckle on the dog’s collar or harness break, this adjustable clip provides extra backup that could prevent an escape.

Best Parts:

  • Easy to use and adjust to size

  • Great price for something that could prevent a runaway dog

  • Your dog won’t even notice they are wearing it

Stuff We Don’t Love (but not deal breakers):

  • The only downside is that you’re not already using it!
